Anne Ingeborg Biringvad

Anne Ingeborg Biringvad is a Norwegian artist whose practice spans painting, sculpture, installation, and textile collage. Since beginning her career in the early 1990s, she has developed a distinctive visual language rooted in material history and cultural memory. Her work draws on ancient craft traditions from around the world—woven, stitched, and layered with Norwegian heritage—and reimagines them in dialogue with contemporary issues such as consumerism, migration, and inequality.

Biringvad’s site-specific installations function as three-dimensional collages composed of hand-stitched textiles, rugs, and found domestic objects collected over many years from flea markets and secondhand shops. Each element carries traces of personal and collective history, creating layered environments that bridge the past and the present. These familiar materials invite reflection on how cultural heritage, labor, and everyday life shape our shared sense of identity.

For the Motherland project, Biringvad revisits family photographs and artifacts that document daily life in Norway and North Dakota. Through her series The Abandoned, she paints portraits of forgotten figures and worn objects—remnants of lives once lived. “I want to bring these historical scenes into the present,” she explains. “History is not just something from the past. It’s in all of us—in our names, our language, and the way we see the world.”

Biringvad’s work transforms memory into material form, honoring the continuity between generations and the enduring resonance of domestic and cultural traditions.
