Moira Bateman

Moira Bateman is an American artist whose textile works emerge through collaboration with the natural world. Drawing on her background in landscape ecology and restoration, she creates site-responsive pieces shaped by elemental forces—sun, water, mud, and time. Working with hand-loomed silk, Bateman dyes her materials using sediments gathered from lakes, rivers, and bogs, allowing the landscape itself to leave its mark through weathering, staining, and imprint.

Her process is rooted in slow transformation and reverence for place, influenced by the ancient Scandinavian practice of dyeing textiles in bogs and by the landscapes of western Norway, where her maternal family originates. Each work carries traces of these environments—delicate wrinkles, layered wax, and stitched seams that record the passage of time and the interplay between human intent and natural change.

Bateman’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including the Minnesota Museum of Art, DeVos Art Museum, Science Museum of Minnesota, Bowery Gallery, and Kunstnarhuset Messen in Ålvik, Norway. She is a recipient of awards from the McKnight Foundation, Jerome Foundation, Minnesota State Arts Board, and Grand Marais Art Colony.

Through her practice, Bateman transforms cloth into a vessel of memory—an abstracted landscape where ecology, emotion, and time converge.
